Wassily Kandinsky once said: “An image must sound and be soaked of inner glow.” Therefore it is not only about the colours and shapes, but also about the sound of art. In other words: a synergy is essential. On Stephanie Wagner’s new album “Shapes & Colours” the timbres are glowing and awakened to life.

It is one of the rare jazz recordings, on which the flute is used as the lead instrument. Stephanie Wagner mastered with her multifarious, fresh style of play, and makes the entire variety of the flute audible. With her band project “Stephanie Wagners Quinsch”, the flutist uses the tonal possibilities of the quintet as a playground for her own compositions. This resulted in an eclectic and energetic album.

The different shapes and styles of the musical pieces generate diversified moods and colours, and display the quintet’s big sound spectrum. Thereby, Stephanie Wagner’s music is consistently representing new perspectives. Modern Jazz and free passages are well placed next to a piano piece of Robert Schumann. The melancholic harmony, odd meters, and atmospherical pieces offer a variety of strong contrasts.

Rhythmical finesse and a huge dynamic range display the mature interplay of “Stephanie Wagners Quinsch”. Every single band member highlights through original improvisations. Stephanie Wagner plays modern and creatively: Through unorthodox playing techniques, e.g. growling, beatboxing or percussive playing, she manages to extend her flute sound and occasionally alienates the same one with electronic effects.

Stephanie Wagner majored in classical and jazz flute at the conservatory of Mainz and Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA). She was honored with the Jazz award of the city of Worms as an excellent instrumentalist. Her musical influences and encounters are numerous. Among many different projects, she also toured with “Söhne Mannheims” and played in classic, punk, and salsa formations. As a pedagogue, she gives workshops about jazz flute throughout Germany and published her book “Play Jazzflute - now!” by Schott-Music
